Dr Serena Lai is a highly motivated, enthusiastic and experienced clinician, who offers high standards of care.
She works as a Consultant Psychiatrist for the National Health Service in South London and as a Private Psychiatrist in her own practice in central London.
Her ethos is putting her patients first in her day to day practice and always being there for them. She is always reachable via phone call, text, Whatsapp and email.
- Assessment and treatment of psychiatric conditions such as:
– Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
– Bipolar Disorder
- Psychoeducation around mental illness, relapse indicators and ways of managing it.
- Sessions with patients, families or carers to discuss illness, impact on them and coping strategies.
- Expert opinion on psychopharmacological treatments.
- Availability on the phone, via text and email if necessary.
- Liaison with GPs through letters after each appointment and availability on the phone and via email if required.
Consultations can be conducted in English or in Italian.
First appointment, includes an hour assessment: £300
Follow up appointment:
- Standard, 30 minutes medical review: £200
- Extended, 60 minutes medical review: £300
Phone calls, emails and text messages are free of charge.
Please be aware that there is a two working days notice policy for all cancellations and changes of private appointments. Costs are incurred when changes are made at short notice. So for appointments that are cancelled or postponed with less than 48 hours notice, the full fee is charged.

About – Curriculum Vitae
Dr Lai attended the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the University of Cagliari, Italy, between September 2001 and July 2007. She graduated with 110 summa cum laude on 20th July 2007. As a student, she completed various internships, such as measurement and data analysis, nutrition, human physiology, and general and microbiological pathology. She also spent time in several specialist units such as pathological anatomy, gastroenterology, ophthalmology, urology, nephrology, orthopaedics, cardiology, pulmonology, internal medicine, allergology, rheumatology, radiology, oncology, haematology, otorhinolaryngology, dermatology, neurology, psychiatry, and paediatrics.
Dr Lai trained in Psychiatry at the University of Cagliari, Italy, from 1 April 2008 to 31 March 2012, when she graduated with 50 summa cum laude. Over those years, Dr Lai also worked as a General Practitioner and she did day and night shifts in local Accident & Emergency Services, called “Guardie Mediche”, all around the island of Sardinia. This allowed her to get better knowledge and practice in medical emergency as well as expertise in treating psychiatric conditions in hospital as well as in the community. While she was still doing her training, in November 2011, Dr Lai started her private practice in Italy that lasted until October 2017, after three year of living in England.
After her training in the Psychiatry, Dr Lai worked in Italy for about two years, initially in Olbia for 4 months and later in Oristano, where she worked in a Community Mental Health Centre and in a high secure prison, Massama. During those years, Dr Lai also gave lectures in a school for Health Care Assistants and she worked as an expert witness for the Court as well as private.
Dr Lai moved to the UK in August 2014. She worked as a specialist psychiatrist employed by the National Health Service at George Mackenzie House in Cambridge from September 2014 to January 2017. She provided inpatient care in a low secure psychiatric ward for female and male Adults, aged between 18 and 65. This included assessing psychiatric and physical needs on the ward, carrying out initial assessments in prisons, other intensive care units and hospitals, and writing psychiatric reports for the Court. Dr Lai also worked at the Saffron Walden Community Mental Health Service, where she provided outpatient care.
Dr Lai worked as a Consultant Psychiatrist with Cameo North, Early Intervention Service in Psychosis, at the Cambridge and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust from January 2017 to December 2017. Early Intervention in Psychosis Services are meant to offer complete assessments and interventions for people experiencing their first onset of psychosis.
Dr Lai moved to London in December 2017. She has been working as a Consultant Psychiatrist with COAST, Early Intervention in Psychosis Service, at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust from December 2017 to date. In her current role, she follows up with patients experiencing their first episode of psychosis in the context of Mood Disorders, including Depressive Episodes and Bipolar Disorders, Pre or Post natal period and several Psychotic Disorders, such as Brief and Transient Psychotic Disorder, Unspecified Non Organic Psychosis, Schizoaffective Disorder, and Schizophrenia.
Dr Lai gained the Approved Clinician Approval under the Mental Health Act 1983 (as amended) on 26/05/2016. She became Section 12 (2) Approved under the Mental Health Act 1983 (as amended) on 06/10/2015.
Dr Lai has been a Specialist Associate of the Royal College of Psychiatrists since 08/08/2015, membership number 926050. She has been registered in the Registry of Medical Practitioner and Specialist of the General Medical Council with full registration since January 2014, membership number 7467522. Dr Lai has been registered in the Registry of Medical Practitioner of Cagliari since 19/02/2008, membership number 8913.
